If you like being prepared, you can get foreign money through your bank before you go. You can also exchange money at the airport or use ATMs to quickly pull money out of the wall. ATMs offer competitive conversion rates, so you really don’t need to approach the Money Exchange desk at all.
Before you leave on your trip, find out if your bank has any affiliation with banks abroad. If it does, you can usually pull out money from the affiliated bank ATMs without getting hit with an ATM charge from either bank. For instance, Bank of America has an agreement with Barclays in the UK and BNP Paribas in France, so Bank of America account holders can use ATMs from Barclays and BNP without any charge. This is good because ATM fees can be anywhere from $2-$5 a pop!
